What to Expect with Traditional Metal Braces
To begin the process, the professionals at Made Ya Smile Dental will assess your oral health, taking digital x-rays and 3D cone beam scans of your head, teeth, and jaw, to plan your course of treatment. We will then make detailed impressions of your lower and upper arches so we can study your bite and how your teeth fit together. On the day of your treatment, we will clean the surfaces of your teeth so the brackets can attach more securely. Dr. Yue will then apply a clear or tooth-colored bonding material to hold the brackets firmly in place. Colorful elastic ties are used to secure the metal archwires through each metal bracket. Our staff will help you schedule follow-up appointments at our practice so we can evaluate your progress and make adjustments as needed about once a month.
Traditional Metal Braces Follow-Up
It's normal for patients to experience minor discomfort or soreness following the placement of braces or after each time the wire is changed. Made Ya Smile Dental suggests a soft food diet and over-the-counter pain relievers to improve your comfort. Traditional metal braces and the brackets, bands, and wires create plenty of space for food particles, plaque, and bacteria to accumulate, which means proper home care is essential during this time. Our staff recommends brushing and flossing following every meal and will teach you how to use special tools to brush and clean around the metal hardware. Keeping up with cleanings and examinations are also imperative to maintaining a healthy smile.
Treatment time varies based on your individual case, but usually lasts from 1 – 3 years. Dr. Yue will assess your condition and offer a more accurate estimate. When this phase of your orthodontic care is finished, we will remove the wires, brackets, and bands, then take impressions of your teeth to create a custom-fitted retainer. Your retainer should be worn as recommended to keep your teeth in place and prevent them from returning to their original positions. Our team will then offer you instructions to help you maintain a healthy, aligned smile for life.
Most patients who wear wire braces experience a simple dental emergency, such as a bracket or wire becoming loose or detached. To minimize this risk, we recommend avoiding biting down on hard or sticky foods. If you have an issue with your braces, reach out to our clinic right away so we can repair your orthodontics as quickly as possible. There are a few ways to address several concerns until you can have the appliance fixed. Here are a few common issues you may face:

Loose Band or Bracket: If it is still attached to the wire, simply leave it in place until you can come in for an appointment. Any irritating areas can be covered with orthodontic wax or sugarless gum.
Loose Appliance: Appliances such as space maintainers or palatal expanders need to be reattached immediately. Until you can visit our clinic, you can try to stabilize the appliance by holding it in place with orthodontic wax.
