Fluoride Treatment Overview
Professional fluoride treatments are an important part of a complete preventive care plan for patients in Houston, TX. Found naturally in water, soil, and some food, fluoride is known to strengthen teeth and protect patients against tooth decay as well as cavities. It's proven that communities that add fluoride to their drinking water see a reduction in cavities and tooth decay. Many prestigious groups, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Medical Association (AMA), understand the positive benefits of fluoride to an individual's overall and oral health. Dr. Jireh Yue of Made Ya Smile Dental recommends regular fluoride treatments to provide you and your family with the best chance of preventing future cavities. Fluoride can be administered during one of your dental cleaning visits or through supplemental usage at home. Best Candidates for Fluoride Treatment
While patients of all ages can benefit from cavity prevention with the use of fluoride, it's often recommended for individuals whose teeth are at higher risk for developing tooth decay or younger patients with less than regular oral health habits. Adults with gum recession and exposed root surfaces and those who have a history of tooth decay are also ideal candidates. Professional fluoride applications may also be suggested for those who do not have regular access to fluoridated water. Incipient decay, or early carious lesions, may be re-mineralized through in-office or at-home treatments. This also reduces the need for restorative treatment such as fillings. Dr. Yue offers easy, efficient treatments in varnish, gel, and foam forms and in a wide spectrum of flavors. We may also give you prescription strength fluoridated toothpaste or supplements if we believe you will benefit from the additional fluoride.
What to Expect with Fluoride Treatment
Based on your family's individual needs, professional fluoride treatments can be offered once or twice every year during a regular dental cleaning or check-up visit. After your initial cleaning, Dr. Yue will apply the fluoride either with a paint-on varnish, gel, or foam. The gel and foam treatments are both delivered via mouth trays that stay in contact with your enamel for about 1 – 4 minutes, then Made Ya Smile Dental will suction the fluoride out. When painted on, the varnish is applied in liquid form, then carried over into the grooves of the teeth through the saliva.
Fluoride Treatment Follow-Up
Our team may instruct you to avoid consuming any food or beverages for about 30 minutes after your treatment is applied. If Dr. Yue uses fluoride varnish, we may also suggest you avoid eating hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for a few hours after your visit. This helps fluoride stay in contact with the enamel for as long as possible so it is absorbed properly. Swallowing fluoride is harmful and can cause stomach pain, so parents or guardians should closely supervise the use of drugstore or prescription fluoridated toothpaste or supplements. Fluoride can be an excellent addition to a preventive oral care routine. Continue to keep regular brushing and flossing at home along with visits at Made Ya Smile Dental for a happier and healthier smile.
