Oral-Conscious Sedation Overview
Due to advancements in dental care and state-of-the-art tools, dental procedures are more comfortable and minimally invasive than ever. Many individuals, however, still experience fear or anxiety, even if they only require routine care. At Made Ya Smile Dental, we strive to help patients feel relaxed when receiving treatment through oral-conscious sedation. Also known as "twilight sedation," oral-conscious sedation is a prescription anti-anxiety medication that you take about an hour before your appointment. This medication keeps you relaxed yet awake during the procedure with the ability to follow simple instructions. Don't let fear hold you back from maintaining excellent oral care. Call our team in Houston, TX to schedule your consultation with Dr. Jireh Yue at our family practice.
Best Candidates for Oral-Conscious Sedation
Patients who experience dental anxiety or fear can benefit from oral-conscious sedation, no matter your age or the type of dental treatment you receive. It's also a great option if you have a strong gag reflex or if you've had a less than positive experience at the dentist in the past. At Made Ya Smile Dental, Dr. Yue and his staff will review your medical history, any medications or supplements you are taking, and learn about your dental fears to determine if you are a fit for oral-conscious sedation. We will then determine the best anti-anxiety medication that meets your needs and call the prescription to your local pharmacy. Please inform a member of our team if you are pregnant, believe you are pregnant, are allergic to benzodiazepines, or have issues with your heart or lungs.
What To Expect with Oral-Conscious Sedation
Made Ya Smile Dental can prescribe a few different types of anti-anxiety medication with a lower or higher dose based on the level of sedation needed, the complexity of treatment, and your general health condition. During your consultation, Dr. Yue will prescribe you a medication that should be taken about one hour before your scheduled procedure. The effects will leave you awake with a limited memory of the treatment. Patients tend to feel drowsy or fall asleep but are easily awaked by a member of our team. Please contact a member of your family or another responsible adult to drive you to and from your visit.
Oral-Conscious Sedation Recovery
During your consultation and assessment, Made Ya Smile Dental will discuss your options for oral-conscious sedation, including what to expect along with any potential side effects. Recovery will vary based on the medication and dosage you received, but all patients will need a responsible adult to drive you home after your appointment and stay with you until the effects wear off. You should not operate a vehicle for the rest of the day as you will feel drowsy from the medication. Anti-anxiety medication may cause dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or headaches. To minimize these side effects, you can eat a light meal before your appointment and a small snack an hour or so after. If you have any issues or side effects that linger, please contact our clinic right away so we can address your concerns.
Oral-Conscious Sedation Insurance Coverage
At your initial consultation, Made Ya Smile Dental will review your dental insurance and reach out to your provider to see if your plan offers coverage for oral-conscious sedation. Patients who do not have insurance or incur personal expenses will be given several convenient payment options to make sure oral-conscious sedation fits within your budget. For this reason, our clinic partners with CareCredit® low-financing solutions for patients.
Don't allow dental anxiety to prevent you from getting a healthy, beautiful smile for life. At Made Ya Smile Dental, we cater to patients of all ages who are fearful of visiting the dentist or getting a procedure on their teeth, gums, or jaw. Oral-conscious sedation is a safe, time-tested method of relaxation in a warm, welcoming environment.
